Commuting and Enhanced Rural-Urban Interaction: A Study from South Bengal Mondal Bhaswati Ph. D. Scholar, Department of Geography, The University of Burdwan, Barddhaman, West Bengal, India, bhaswatimondal11@gmail.com Online published on 7 April, 2017. Abstract With the development of transport, commuting has become a crucial form of mobility, replacing the long tradition of migration. It bears the potentiality to change the settlement systems through creation of a number of small towns and large villages. This article attempts to focus on the important role of commuting in making rural-urban interactions smoother in parts of South Bengal. It uses both secondary and primary data. Primary data were collected through interviews with commuters who use the Howrah-Barddhaman Suburban Railway (main line). This research shows that the facility of commuting has increased population size near the stations of this suburban railway, turning them into census towns. It also shows that these census towns play an important role in making rural-urban ties strong and meaningful.
