Abstract

The multi-step converters takes plays essential role in the research area of solar energy system based grid, FACTS devices (especially DVR and STATCOM) and various industrial drive applications etc,. The major constraints of these converters requires several DC voltage sources, ON/OFF switches, driver circuits, diodes, capacitors etc,. This makes complexity of circuit and huge investment. In order to solve this problem, this paper introduces an innovative ASMC (Addition-Subtraction Multi-step Converter) topology which is capable of delivering 3n level step output voltage (n represents the counting of DC sources) with very few counting of components. This leads to reduce the size and cost of the converter drastically. The proposed ASMC topology may lengthen to any number of levels with lesser components count which results in lower harmonics spectrum and better output step waveform quality. This paper presents the C-level asymmetric ASMC topology using only few DC voltage source. The H-bridge is combined with this topology to generate alternate positive and negative waveforms as well. The operational features of the proposed ASMC topology has been simulated by simulation software MATLAB/SIMULINK and reconfirmed by hardware prototype model.
