Abstract

In wireless sensor networks, sensor nodes are deployed randomly in harsh physical surroundings to gather and deliver data to the remote base station. Since sensor nodes have to preserve energy source, they have limited computation capability. It is difficult to transmit the sensed information over the sensor network for a long period of time in an energy efficient manner. In this paper, a reliable and efficient energy-based data gathering algorithm in wireless sensor networks has been proposed. The contribution of the research work is the proposal of a Grade- Based Data Gathering (GBDG) algorithm to minimize the energy consumption of wireless sensor networks. The results show that the network lifetime with Energy Efficient GBDG (EE-GBDG) is many fold more than that of LEACH and PEGASIS respectively. Unlike PEGASIS and LEACH, the delay per round of data gathering is considerably lower when GBDG is employed. The energy consumed per round of data gathering for both GBDG and EEGBDG is 50% less than that of PEGASIS and LEACH. Compared to LEACH and PEGASIS, GBDG and EE-GBDG are more efficient. The proposed algorithm utilizes the minimum amount of energy, delay, energy delay product and maximizes the lifetime.
