Abstract The growing information complexity of corporate disclosures is a serious concern to investors. Though many professional investors use information from several sources, the annual report has remained as the most important means of communication for a firm. This study investigates the usefulness of the corporate annual report as a source of information for decision-making by professional investors. The study also aims to determine the credibility that professional investors attach to the information provided in the annual reports. Data was collected through a structured questionnaire from a sample of 68 analysts in assets management companies, mutual funds and broking firms based at Coimbatore, Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai. The findings indicate that the respondents consider financial disclosures as most crucial, and the profit and loss section of the report as the most important. The study also highlights the need for firms to present information in the annual report in a comprehendible format.
