Abstract The number of cores integrated on a single chip increases day by day as the semiconductor technology increases. Network-on-Chip (NoC) architectures are viewed as a possible solution to the wiring challenge and have recently crystallized into a significant research thrust. The communication on NoC is carried out in different topologies required for different applications by means of routers. In this paper, we design Elastic Buffer Router Architecture (EBRA) along with Quality-of-Service (QoS) routing mechanism in order to minimize the area and power. A loop-back module is also incorporated to the proposed architecture to maximize the speed of operation. The router architecture is implemented in 3D Partial Mesh of grid Topology (PMT) to evaluate the performance of the architecture. PMT based NoC will give minimum area and power and it reduces the high chances of redundant connections. Throughput and latency are analyzed along with other parameters like packet loss ratio and jitter using network simulator NS-2. Area and power analysis is done using Synopsys Design Compiler supporting 90 nm CMOS technology. Our experimental results show that the architecture with QoS mechanism gives a significant reduction in area and power when compared to other router architectures. Moreover, PMT gives minimal latency and high throughput when compared to Fully connected Mesh of grid Topology (FMT).
