Abstract In Higher Educational Institutions, which are considered as the hub of talented professionals; faculty retention has been emerged as a critical issue. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of movement desirability i.e., job satisfaction and institutional commitment in influencing the intention to stay among two groups of faculty classified as stayers and leavers. Structural Equation Modelling was carried out to empirically validate the effects of movement desirability on faculty's retention at the institutions. A total of 435 full time faculty members from higher education institutions, having accredited engineering disciplines were surveyed. Results indicate that movement desirability i.e., job satisfaction and institutional commitment had significant effect on intention to stay of both stayers and leavers. Job satisfaction better explain the desirability effect on stayer's intention to stay at the institutions, whereas normative commitment explains the effect on leaver's intention to stay. Finally, the implications for practices and planning strategies are discussed.
