Abstract

Third Gender, the people in a biological state of gender identity not matching one's assigned sex. Third Gender is a common terminology having categories like transsexual, cross-dresser, androgyny and bi-gender. The Third Gender community was found to be available since the ancient period. The community experiences abuse and harassment from the society either physical or mental and they are considered marginal and vulnerable in the society. Also they pose an image of sex-workers. Although not all Third Genders are sex workers, about 70 percent of the community is reported as sex-workers. They are refused by their family and the society. With the survey of research works made on the Third Gender community in the previous decade, it was found that the community faced several challenges in the society. To examine the issues and challenges faced by the community with the context of society, a survey of previous research reports was made. Common issues of the Third Gender community prevailing in the field of education, politics, media, employment and family were taken into consideration. Typical statistical data has been framed from the 83 research reports, survey reports and discussion papers from 2010 to 2014. This review helps social activists to put forth efforts for the wellness of the Third gender community.
