Abstract

In spite of protections in national and international wide, transgenders have been a deserted community throughout the universe. Baring few countries, there is recognition denial of their rights and are at times forced to lead beast survival life. The Indian Transgenders community encompasses persons with a variety of gender identities and sexual orientations, forming a culturally unique gender group. Although these communities have existed for ages within Indian society, transgenders have been stigmatized and marginalized to a large extent. Such stigmatization may compromise the mental health of transgenders possibly giving rise to various mental health issues. The socio-cultural aspects of transgenders have frequently been the issue of research by anthropologists and sociologists. Transgender people face multiple forms of oppression. This paper focuses to summarize the various issues faced by transgenders by using the socio-cultural aspects and social exclusion framework, and to highlight their contemporary stance in Indian society.
