Abstract

The present study is an effort to find out the differential personality development of boys and girls in the single-sex and eight coeducational schools. From eight randomly selected districts of Punjab, eight coeducational and single-sex (equally divided by sex) schools were selected. From the 128 schools, 4448 students participated in the study. The personality of students was measured using Children Personality Questionnaire adapted and translated for the study. The 2x2 Analysis of Variance was carried out to explore the significance of the two main effects i.e. gender and type of school and their interaction on the scores obtained by the students. The t-test was also applied to compare the mean scores of boys and girls in the single-sex and coeducational schools. The results indicated that the students in the single-sex schools were more outgoing, participative, emotionally stable and intelligent, whilst, students in the coeducational schools were more reserved, cool, less intelligent, emotionally less stable and inactive. The girls were more adversely affected in the coeducation schools than boys. The study concludes that single-sex schools provide more pleasant and supportive learning environment to boys and girls leading to more positive personality traits.
