Abstract Indian banking sector has undergone major transformation with the implementation of second banking sector reforms and with the introduction of IT Act. These two are the major transformation with leads the Indian banking industry to the new heights. But on the other side, it has also put Indian banks into the era of stiff competition and profit oriented banking where no other thing matters for the banks. In this modern type of banking, profit is the lifeline of banking industry. With this view in mind, a comparative study is done w.r.t. to different parameters related with bank's profitability like deposits, investments, advances, assets, interest income, other income, interest expenses and other expenses. t-Ratios were used for measuring significant difference in bank's performance on these parameters in 2012 as compared to 2011. Coefficient of variation is used to measure consistency in performance and percentage technique is used to measure increase in performance in 2012 as compared to 2011. For that Indian banking industry is divided into three parts namely public sector bank group, private sector bank group and foreign sector bank group. The study concludes that neither of the bank group showed significant rise in its performance in 2012 as compared to 2011. As far as the consistency in performance is concerned, public sector bank group is more consistent as compared to other two bank groups and as far as average percentage rise in performance on different parameters in 2012 as compared to 2011 is concerned, private sector bank group is performing better than the other two selected bank groups. Foreign sector bank group clearly fails in this regard as it neither shows significant rise in its performance in 2012 as compared to 2011 nor it is consistent in its performance.
