Educational Experiences of Indigenous People With Special Reference to Tripura, North-East India

Abstract

This paper is divided into five sections. The first section present a background and problems of the educational experiences of the indigenous people with relation to their ethnic composition, representation of knowledge and culture; and economic challenges in nutshell from Tripura and adopting few cases from the north-east India. The following sections will discuss the empirical study of the educational experiences of Indigenous people of Tripura. In section two, it deals with the composition of ethnic group and their relationship to understand how they shaped the question of mother-tongue (Kokborok) and their impact on the educational experiences of the indigenous people. The third section, deals with the question of whose culture and knowledge is embedded in the educational experience of the indigenous people. It assumes the curriculum as a bulk of knowledge and a method to assess whose knowledge it represents through the educational experiences of the indigenous people. It will further deal with the controversy of Kokborok language, representation of folktale, indigenous games, indigenous festivals and representation of history to identify the question of representation of culture, knowledge, curriculum and their impact on educational experiences. Fourth section will identify the indigenous people's experiences of socio-economic challenges and how it has an impact on their educational experiences. The final section is an option for change and the author's argument and thought process.
