Abstract The Indian economy being a forerunner in the group of emerging economies is attracting many foreign direct investments to take place the most important among them being the food retail market The rapid pace at which the organized retail sector in the country is growing, there is a fear that it will replace the traditional retailers who have not alternative source of income and employment. The latter half of the twentieth century witnessed the rapid rise of supermarkets in almost all the countries of the world, though the pace of expansion varied. The process of evolution of supermarkets is characterized by a shift from fragmented local markets (such as village markets with wholesale and retail functions) to larger and centralized wholesale markets from where traditional retailers and hawkers procure their requirements (Reardon and Berdegue, 2003, The study analyses the impact of the growth of organized food retailing on the traditional retailers in Bangalore city and their coping mechanisms.
