Nyishi Burial System and Aspect of Folk Media

Abstract

Nyishi is one of the largest tribal communities in the state of Arunachal Pradesh located at North-Eastern part of India. The land and the people lesser known to the outside world; unexplored and less studied tribe, it becomes an imperative subject for study and to know about the unknown as well as unfamiliar tribal culture and traditions of this tribe. Every tribal community has their own way of burial system and symbols and sign used on the structure carries different messages. This study is an attempt to study/find out and document the communication aspect of Nyishi people by studying their folk media which they practice in day to day life, with special emphasis on their burial system (Seymmaleenam), and also various rituals incorporated with funeral. The study will also determine the changes that have taken place in the conventional burial system due to influenced of other religion and modernity. Moreover, study will also highlight on religious movement taken up with idea of safeguarding the ancient customs. For this study researcher would be using both primary and secondary data for this paper via studying previously published papers, and taking personal interviews and making participatory observation.
