The Role of Micro-Finance in Women Entrepreneurship

Abstract

The present study is an attempt to analyze the role and performance of SHGs in promoting women's entreprenurship in manikpur block in Chitrakoot District of Uttar Pradesh. The wide objective of the study is to analyses the operating system of SHGs for mobilization of saving, delivery of credit to the needy, management of group funds, repayment of loans, in building up leadership, establishing linkage with banks and examines the social benefits derived and problem faced by the members. To collect and gather primary data, field observation and structured questionnaire survey methods were used. In addition, information was also collected through discussions and interviews with local NGOs and government's grass roots level workers. The researcher has chosen 100 SHG member. The study reveals that SHGs had set a new agenda for financial intermediation by banks in the form of micro-credit. By the initiation of SHGs, credits are demanded for various purposes. Different economic activities are undertaken by the members of the SHGs after joining the group. Economic independence, Habits of savings, social cohesion, asset ownership, self confidence, freedom from debt, additional employment, etc. benefits are received by the SHG members. So, SHGs have served the cause of women empowerment, socio-economic betterment and social solidarity of the poor for their consolidation.
