Why Do Some Small Holder Farmers Repudiate Microfinance Institutions? Some Evidences from Tanzania Mapesa Haruni Department of Accounting and Finance, School of Business, Mzumbe University, Tanzania Online published on 7 January, 2015. Abstract This paper presents an investigation of the factors influencing the decision to participation in MFIs among rural farm households in Tanzania. The paper uses household survey data obtained from three districts of Iringa region in Tanzania. A sample of 210 microfinance participants and 257 non-participants was involved in the survey. Results show that the level of poverty of farm households, fear of asset confiscation in case of failure to repay loan, lack of diversification in rural non-farm activities among farm households deter majority from taking part in MFIs. Results further show that volatility of crop yield and fluctuations in output prices resulting into inability to cope with loan repayments deter yet another class of potential MFIs users. Quantitative analysis show education level of household head, quality of house, and availability of non-farm income are important factors. Policy intervention should be geared toward improving investments in agricultural infrastructure and awareness programmes.
