Abstract

In this paper, we review the origin and development of Self Help Group (SHG) movement in the Nashik district for the period 1999–2000 to 2009–10. Taking into account the percentage of poor people in the Nashik district and potential for formation of SHG, So far 48 percent SHG have been formed and remaining 52 percent are yet to be formed. The woman dominated SHGs are 77 percent of the total formed SHG. It is a great achievement of this movement that we observed. The role of banking institutions in strengthening of the SHG movement is disappointing because only 33 percent SHG could avail the finance from the banks. Another notable observation is that amongst the various beneficiaries’ women strength is confined to near about 53 percent which is a remarkable achievement of SHG movement in the Nashik district. This has contributed in the women's welfare and offered them dignity in the society and also created a sense of self employment.
