Online published on 21 September, 2017. Abstract In a rapidly changing competitive atmosphere, human resources are one significant basis of competitive advantage. Human resources is considered the assets of each nation, which proved to make competitive advantage compared with countries depend on natural resources. Speedy changes in technology development and importance of globalization, and social change make demands for organizations to appraise their programs, strategies and services. Management is the key to reflect these changes and disseminate technology into the structure of the organization and lead competitive advantage. The human resources in the organizations have knowledge, skills and experience which contribute for the development of the organizations through competitive advantage. To explore the significant role of human resource practices in Indian software industry, a survey was conducted with various level employees. The structured questionnaire was prepared for this study which broadly focuses on human resource practices such as recruitment and selection, training and development, motivation performance and satisfaction. The sample chosen is based on the top four software companies listing in NASSCOM annual report (2013–2015). It was observed that to a certain extent large-scale software companies are practicing similar human resource practices across the levels. The medium and small software companies have subtle differences in human resource practices that are being practised across the levels/hierarchies.
