Abstract

Economic development in India is not balanced. The fruits of development do not cover all the regions. Regional disparities and imbalances in levels of economic and social development are one of the major areas of concern for Indian economy. Chhattisgarh, basically a tribal state faces numerous issues and challenges related to agricultural development, industrial progress, infrastructural facilities and human development and suffer from some serious types of inter-district regional disparities. At present, the state has 27 districts but the study has been limited to 18 districts as per Census Report 2011 The basic objective of this paper is to bring into light the intra-state regional imbalance of economic development in Chhattisgarh. An empirical and statistical analysis of regional imbalance among the districts has been provided on the basis of available secondary data. The paper suggests that there is a need for "Big Push? in social and economic development in the backward and problem regions of the state.
