Abstract

The study focuses on examining the applicability of the generalized Schaefer model, a natural resource economics model developed by Oishi et al. (2014) under the assumption that fish biomass is not at equilibrium, to the multispecies aggregated catch and effort data from India's states/union territories marine fishery sector. The results of the study indicates that this model can comfortably fit the macro marine fishery data from India's marine states/union territories. Moreover, the result of the simulated annual trends in fish stock levels, called relative biomass, shows that the fish stock has declined from around 95 percent of the caring capacity in 1970 to around 37 percent of the caring capacity in 2005, that puts the sustainability of the India's marine fishery sector at great risk.
