Abstract The practice of corporate philanthropy in India has a deep root but it has received increasing importance particularly in last couple of decades. The mandatory provision recently included in the Company's Act 2013, brings out revolutionary changes in the area of human development and social inclusion. A journey from voluntarism to mandated provision attracts several queries on corporate social responsibility. Increased competition in the market and the wave of globalization has changed the view of corporate sector towards society. Today, CSR has become a vital part of the business strategy for most of the organizations, be it a public or private sector firms. This paper tries to explore the nature and effectiveness of CSR in implementing the mandatory provisions of the Companies Act 2013. The study has used secondary evidences to substantiate emerging points and support the outcomes. The paper also brings out the comparison between the public and private sector firms regarding the fulfillment of the mandatory provision and seeks to address the contribution of the corporate houses towards upliftment and development of the society using the phenomena of Triple Bottom Line. This study would also be helpful in analyzing the myths existing in the society that the provisions of this Act are not able to bring out the desired results. Hopefully, the outcomes of the study will be helpful to the administrators in strengthening the policy related to CSR for its effective implementation for the betterment of the society.
