Abstract

This paper has explored the Impact of Mobile Phones across the various dimensions of Time among Corporate Professionals. The objective of this study is to formulate a conceptual model to empirically test the Impact of Mobile Use on the experience of Personal Leisure Time and Professional Time.

This study was designed using a qualitative dominant approach which enabled to develop rich descriptions to answer the question-What is the Impact of Mobile Use among Corporate Professionals on their experience of time.

The findings reveal that a significant impact of Mobile Use has been the diffusion of boundaries of work and personal life. Mobile Phone technology provides Connectivity, Accessibility, Simultaneity and Instantaneity that in turn enables a better balance of time towards work, personal and home responsibilities among Corporate professionals. Mobile technology gives freedom on the one hand, and increases complexity on the other. Time on one hand gets utilized optimally while at the same time tasks get stretched over longer time periods. The concerns shared were around tasks getting stretched and Mobile use taking up time for non consequential sundry activities. Further the exploration also revealed that Mobile Phone and multi-tasking has become way of life. The study reveals gendered patterns on the experience of Time which requires further investigation.

Time as a dimension has been an area of exploration in the Social Studies of Technology disciplines from many perspectives. This paper attempts has addressed the lack of Mobile studies in the Indian context despite India being one of the largest Mobile markets and also from the perspective of Corporate Professionals who are the most intensive Mobile users.

From a practical perspective, the analysis provides meaningful insights for organizations for reflection on the inter connections between Mobile Phone and work-life balance, the overall impact on the experience of time as a dimension especially in the contemporary digitally disrupted world.

From a theoretical perspective, the study has synthesized the various Time dimensions into three core: Time Condensation, Time Deepening and Time Perception and developed a conceptual model that can be used in future researches to empirically study the Impact of Mobile Use on the Experience of Personal leisure Time and Professional Time.

Future scope for empirical research points towards investigating how Mobile adoption and consumption practices can be used to control Time. A gendered lens to study the Time dimension is recommended to provide useful and meaningful insights.
