Multivariate Statistical Approach to Demographic Transition in Asia

Abstract

Asia is the largest populous continent on earth with 30% of the world's land area and 60% of the world's current population as of 2013. It also has the highest growth rate today, and its population almost quadrupled during the 20th century. Asia has the two most populous countries in its borders: China with an estimated population of 1.36 billion and India with 1.26 billion in 2013. The present paper is concerned with the study of the nature of demographic transition in Asia across the countries. Using six variables of demographic transition and with the help of multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), the paper attempts to answer a question whether there is a significant GDP percapita growth effect on demographic transition across countries of Asia during 1980–85 to 2010–15 and shedlight for demographic management. The significance of the GDP per capita growth effects on demographic transition is confirmed using MANOVA test statistics.
