Abstract India still breathes in villages and this becomes obvious when the fact is taken into consideration that more than 700 million of its population resides in about 636 thousand villages of this country; but even after 60 years of independence, rural India is characterized by severe poverty, illiteracy, lack of health services, lack of employment opportunities and overall backwardness. Entrepreneurship is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon. The share of agriculture has increasingly declined in recent years resulting in continuous migration from the rural to urban areas in search of better employment opportunities and living standard. Thus, there is need to strengthen employment opportunities in the rural areas by promoting rural entrepreneurship..The study is made in the Sonitpur district of Assam based on data collected from 288 entrepreneurs through interview schedule. The findings suggest that the most of the entrepreneurs face problems like security, infrastructural problem, excessive arrangement in loan arranagement, lack of proper training and knowledge etc. It concludes with few suggestions based on findings of the study.
