Abstract The present study was to isolate and identify antimicrobial activity producing actinomycetes strains from marine habitat, to find out antibacterial efficiency against the common human pathogens. Marine actinomycetes were isolated from salt pan region of Kodiakarai, Nagapattinam [District]. Out of 20 isolated actinomycetes 10 were identified and selected for antibacterial activity. Out of 10 dominant actinomycete species Streptoverticillium album was highly dominant and showed the best level of antibacterial activity against three human pathogens, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pheumoniae and Escherichia coli. The isolation, characterization and the study on actinomycetes can be useful in the discovery of antibiotics and also confirmed by molecular characterization.
