Abstract This paper has analysed the impact of population growth on agricultural resource utilization and the associated health problems in India at the national and regional levels during the past 50 years using secondary data from 1961–2011. The data on population and its components, viz. size, structure, distribution and other characteristics were obtained from various census reports. The time series data pertaining to natural resources and land utilization, area, production, productivity of principal crops and the pattern of irrigation, fertilizers, environmental pollution, etc. were obtained from the Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Fertilizer Statistics, India Development Report, various economic surveys and other sources. The paper has provided a strong empirical basis for formulating effective policies in reducing resource depletion and environmental pollution. The paper has suggested bringing a balance in the population-resource-environment through effective policy formulation.
