Addressing Productivity Gaps to Sustain Small-scale Rice Farming in Andhra Pradesh Nirmala B., Muthuraman P., Meera Shaik N., Waris Amtul Directorate of Rice Research, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh Online published on 10 September, 2013. Abstract The study has assessed the productivity gap between achievable yield and farmer yield in small-scale rice farming and has identified the factors that contribute to this gap. The data for study were collected from 120 smallholder rice farmers of Guntur and Nalgonda districts in Andhra Pradesh during kharif 2012. The index of yield gap has been found to be 17.4 per cent. The constraints in realizing the potential yields have been prioritized by using the Garrett's ranking technique. Lack of remunerative price, shortage of labour during peak operation periods, non-availability of fertilizers in time and incidence of pests and diseases have been identified as the major constraints in rice production in the study area. The paper has argued that if production constraints being experienced in this region are addressed, productivity can be increased by about of 17.4 per cent. The strategies suggested in the paper to address these yield gaps include adoption of selective mechanization, better extension services delivery, institutional support in access to credit and use of inputs, etc. Top Keywords Productivity gaps, rice, smallholders, Andhra Pradesh.
