Input Supply and Services Delivery System for Poultry Farming for Sustainable Development of Kumaon Hills Gangwar L. S., Saran Sandeep, Kumar Sarvesh, Awase Maya Central Avian Research Institute, Izatnagar – 243 122, Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh Online published on 9 October, 2012. Abstract The study has evaluated input supply and services delivery channels adopted by different organizations including government, NGOs and private sector for backyard and semi-intensive poultry production in the Kumaon hills. It has revealed that hatcheries supply chicks in following order: commission agents/transporters → NGOs/SHGs → local chicks vendors → poultry farmers. The poor quality and high cost of day-old chicks (DOCs), high mortality, poultry feed and veterinary services have been identified as the major constraints to promotion of poultry production in the Kumaon hills. The economics of poultry production systems has revealed that on an average two batches of birds are reared annually and the average income generation per batch is 5440 per family with a BC ratio of 2.94. Besides, consumption of poultry eggs and meat at the household level also add to their food and nutritional security. The study has concluded that inputs and services delivery should be further strengthened for promotion of family/commercial poultry in the Kumaon hills to fulfil the ever-increasing gaps in demand and supply at affordable prices. Top Keywords Poultry economics, input supply, mortality, veterinary services delivery systems. Top | |
