Contract Farming and Kinnow Cultivation in Sriganganagar, Rajasthan Chand Khema, Kumar Shalandera, Dastagiri M.B.b aCentral Arid Zone Research Institute, Jodhpur, Rajasthan bNational Centre for Agricultural Economics and Policy Research, New Delhi – 110 012 Online published on 9 October, 2012. Abstract The study has examined the role of contract farming in enhancing kinnow production in Sriganganagar district of Rajasthan during 2009–10. The contractors have brought modern implements for kinnow harvesting which cause less damage to fruits and increase market price due to better quality. The state marketing department has also taken steps for organising the trade and has initiated export to other countries. The presence of contractors has not only provided better post-harvest handling but has also found new unexplored distant markets like Hyderabad, Mumbai, Banglore, Chennai, etc. The contractors could better avail the processing facility and sell the produce in distant markets after grading and waxing. The contract system has resulted in assured price of the produce for farmers. Due to rising demand of produce in southern and eastern states of India and new emerging markets in Bangladesh, kinnow's demand has been rising and farmers are encouraged to expand area under kinnow plantation. The study has concluded that contractual arrangements have helped in increasing the farmers’ access to improved package of practices and technology. Further it has resulted in reducing the market risk and increasing farm income. Top Keywords Contract farming, kinnow cultivation, Rajasthan. Top | |
