Abstract

The paper has studied the factors influencing economic access to drip irrigation system (DIS) under the micro-irrigation scheme and the parameters associated with the farmers’ adoption of DIS supply by different companies. For the study, 50 crop farmers and 25 horticultural farmers were selected from the Vridachalam block in the Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu. Almost all the sample farmers opined that the access to DIS was feasible largely due to the subsidy from government and loan from banks. The adoption of DIS with knowledge was more across large (> 4 ha) and above medium (3–4 ha) farmers among both agricultural and horticultural crops growers. The share of drip irrigated area in the total irrigated area was maximum under DIS installed by the company Netafirm (~60%). and low (~ 43%) in DIS installed by ‘Jain’. Also, rate of adoption of DIS has been observed faster in horticultural than agricultural crops. The key benefits reported by farmers in adopting DIS are reduced labour cost and higher yields with decreased cost contribution. The study has concluded that DIS adoption in micro irrigation scheme has enhanced the livelihood of farmers in the area.
