Abstract

Jowar and bajra are cultivated in the dry and arid regions of the country where there is little irrigational facility. The paper has studied the total factor productivity (TFP) growth of these two coarse cereals through two non-frontier approaches, viz. Divisia Solow and Törnqvist index, and one frontier approach, viz. Data Envelopment Analysis by estimating the Malmquist index taking rainfall as one of the inputs in the production process of jowar and bajra. The study has shown that there have been wide variations in TFP growth of jowar and bajra across different states. A higher TFP of jowar and bajra cultivation can be achieved through the use of modern agricultural equipments in the production process.
