Spatio-temporal Disparity in Growth of Fertilizer Consumption in Gujarat State Ardeshna N.J., Shiyani R.L. Department of Agricultural Economics, Junagadh Agricultural University, Junagadh – 336 201, Gujarat Online published on 9 October, 2012. Abstract The growth of fertilizer consumption in different districts of Gujarat has been measured to identify disparity in fertilizer consumption across districts. District-wise data on fertilizer consumption for the period 1960–61 to 2007–08 were collected from the Directorate of Agriculture, Government of Gujarat, Gandhinagar. The compound growth rates have been computed using exponential function. It has been found that there exists a wide disparity in fertilizer comsumption among the districts. The rate of nitrogen consumption varied from 1.95 per cent per annum in the Dang district to 8.64 per cent per annum in the Valsad district. The rate of growth in fertilizer consumption decreased over time in the state; it was highest (25.1%) during the period 1960–61 to 1974–75 and lowest (2.5%) during the period 1990–91 to 2007–08. Therefore, there is need to prioritize technological/nonprice factors, easy access to credit and irrigation facilities besides keeping the prices of fertilizers at affordable level through appropriate price policy instruments.
