Impact of MGNREGS on Curbing Rural Unemployment and Migration Shekhar Shashi CCS National Institute of Agricultural Marketing, Jaipur - 302 033, Rajasthan Online published on 9 October, 2012. Abstract The paper has analysed the trends in rural employment, migration patten and impact of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Scheme (MGNREGS) on rural unemployment, migration and long-term social asset creation for development of sustainable agriculture. The incidence of unemployment has been found much higher in rural areas than in urban areas. The implementation of MGNREGS has been observed quite effective in implementing the social development projects and guaranteeing rural employment to unskilled manual labour on a mass scale. A decreasing trend has been observed in the migration as people are getting employment in their own home places. The MGNREGS has been helpful in creating long-term social assets, which will support the economic development. The emphasis on rural connectivity and natural resource development (land and water) will increase agricultural productivity and provide easy access to the market, giving a better price for the perishable agricultural commodities. Thus, MGNREGS has been found as an effective mode to the rural development and strengthening the purchasing power of poor people in the study area. Top Keywords Rural employment, migration, MGNREGS.
