Abstract Considering the need of creating adequate infrastructure and services for the development of horticultural sector in Uttarakhand, a joint-venture has been launched in the remote hills of Chanffi village near Nainital by establishing a company ‘The Indo Dutch Horticulture Technologies Pvt. Ltd’. This paper has explored the economic and social impacts of this organization on the farmers of this area. It has also studied the constraints that this venture is facing and the opportunities that it can offer. Established in 2009, the company plans to produce and process planting material of flowers like lilium, gladioli, zantedesia and chrysanthemum in this area to cater to the demands of both domestic and international markets. It has created infrastructural facilities of a tissue culture lab, cold storage and processing, greenhouse and marketing. For capacity building, it plans to provide training and technical guidance to the farmers, including women of the region. It will also help in having access to financial institutions and government projects. Thus, it will generate employment and income opportunities, particularly for the local youth, in the area.
