The Tunnelling Association of India (TAI) is Registered Society registered under societies registration act 1860 in the year 1991 for professionals involved with all aspects of tunnel and underground works, including planning, design, engineering, construction and rehabilitation, operation and maintenance, and safety aspects. The society also addresses related contemporary issues such as environmental effects, safety and public awareness.

TAI is the Indian Committee interacting with International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) helps in disseminating information and encouraging planning of the use of subsurface and promoting advances in the planning, design, construction and maintenance of tunnels by bringing together information thereon and by studying questions related thereto, besides projecting India’s expertise at international level through participation in various events of ITA and enabling specialists in the various disciplines to discuss their experiences, research work and /or techniques at various fora. The TAI main objectives are:

(i) To promote objectives of the Tunnelling Association of India which include:
a) To encourage the planning of the use of the sub-surface and to promote advances in the preparatory investigations for tunnels and in the design, construction and maintenance of tunnels by bringing together information thereon and by studying questions related thereto;
b) By interchange of information among its several adhering national organizations; holding executive, public or other meetings at intervals; organizing and co-coordinating studies and experiments; publication of proceedings, reports and documents; and by encouragement of collaboration with and support of International programme in the field of tunnel engineering including cooperation with other organizations/ societies in the activities of common interest;
c) To provide an information service to the concerned with tunnel engineering about the development of techniques, new trends and experience gained by others be enable updating of knowledge;
d) To establish contacts with individuals and organizations/societies in the country with a view to prepare Manuals/Guidelines on different aspects of tunnels and underground constructions;
e) To organize/conduct symposia, seminars, conferences, workshops, training courses at national and international level;
(ii) to provide information to all concerned with Tunnel Engineering about the development of techniques, new trends and experience gained by others to enable updating of knowledge.
(iii) To allow specialists in the various disciplines to discuss their experiences, research work and or techniques at various fora.
(iv) To publish Half yearly Newsletter etc.
