Hydraulic installations along with associated equipment and machinery are vital constituents of any hydel project. Faultless functioning of each system depends upon its timely and preventive maintenance, which can only be done with meticulous planning and framing of proper maintenance schedules. Any laxity on the part of implementation of such schedules may lead to catastrophic situations. Moreover unplanned maintenance shall lead to uneconomical repairs and disruption of entire system. Hence timely and as per well laid out schedules maintenance is of utmost importance for avoiding breakdowns and high cost maintenance. This paper discusses various methods being adopted at Bhakra dam for planned maintenance due to which it is the best maintained project in India and may be one of the best in the world.
