Abstract

The exponents of narratology stress differently; for Aristotle the focus is on theme, for Propp the focus is on plot, and for Genette the focus is on narration. Barthes can be said to focus on the reader. The main emphasis of this paper rests upon the technique of narration as well as the narrative devices used by Morrison to press her point. Morrison intentionally used different narrative techniques for writing about the blacks and about slavery. She wanted to write the history of the Blacks. In this paper, the writer is trying to find out the narrative techniques used in Beloved by Morrison to re-write the history of people under slavery. By taking the story from a real event, Morrison tries to dissect the soul of Beloved's protagonist, Sethe, to show the agony inflicting the lives of slaves. Morrison has made a very effective use of narrative techniques in Beloved, which successfully communicates her views on slavery.
