Synthesis and Insecticidal Activity of Karanj Ketone Oxime and its Ester Derivatives against the Mustard Aphid (Lipaphis erysimi)

Karanjin, the major insecticidal constituent of Pongamia glabra (Karanj) seed oil is known for its moderate insect control activity. The insecticidal potential of karanjin was enhanced following conversion of karanjin to karanj ketone oxime esters. Following treatment with alcoholic-KOH, karanjin was converted to karanj ketone, which on treatment with hydroxylamine hydrochloride yielded karanj ketone oxime. The oxime on further reaction with acid chloride(s) afforded a series of oxime esters. Their structures were confirmed by NMR and mass spectral data. The most bioactive karanj ketone oxime N-O-nonanoate exhibited LC50 0.048% against the mustard aphid. Lipaphis erysimi.
