Influence of age of rice nursery on productivity and water usage under different nitrogen levels and transplanting systems

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted during Kharif season of 2009 and 2010 at the research farm of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana to study the performance of rice nursery of variable age planted under conventional (14 and 28 days old nursery) and system of rice intensification (SRI) (10 and 20 days old nursery) under variable nitrogen levels (N at 90,120,150 and 180 kg/ha and leaf colour chart based N supply). Plant height at maturity was similar under all the treatments. Planting under SRI resulted in the production of more number of tillers per plant, but the number of tillers per unit area was higher under conventional system. Planting of 28 days old nursery in conventional system gave the highest paddy yield and appeared to be most water efficient during both the years. Ten days old nursery transplanted in SRI gave the lowest paddy yield and the least water use efficiency. Increase in the level of N also increased paddy yield during both the years. Leaf color chart based N supply produced paddy yield at par with N90, N120 and N150 during first year and with only N90 during second year. Biological yield continued to increase with the increase in N level beyond N120 during both the years. Harvest index improved with the increase in nitrogen from 90 to 120 kg ha−1 and further increase had detrimental effect on this parameter.
