Determination of a child's growth and development are of paramount value for the purpose of treatment planning in Paediatric Dentistry. For the purpose of age assessment, knowledge of only the chronological age is often inaccurate. The concept of biological age is believed to be more conclusive since it is based upon the degree of maturation of different tissue systems. In this study, an attempt was made to evaluate the various biological ages on the basis of socio-economic strata and nutritional levels.

The study was carried out at the Department of Paediatric Dentistry, SDM College of Dental Sciences, Dharwad on 250 children aged 5–15 years who were categorized on the basis of their socio-economic levels and food habits. The study could conclude that, socio-economic strata influenced the skeletal age, thereby implicating important clinical co-relations between malnutrition and growth patterns observed in children. However it was seen that dental and morphological ages were independent of food habits. Last but not the least, enough evidence could be garnered to suggest the fact that Demirjian's method overestimates the dental age in Hubli-Dharwad (Northern Part of Karnataka State, South India) children.
