Preparation of Phosphocompost from Rice Straw and Response of Groundnut

Abstract

Phosphocomposts containing approximately 4.1 per cent P2O2 were prepared from rice straw by incubating the straw for 3 months with the addition of 2 per cent P2O2 in the form of low-grade Mussoorie rock phosphate containing 17 per cent P2O2. The rock phosphate was applied to the straw in an aqueous slurry of 2.5:1:0.5 (dry weight) cow dung: alluvial soil: well-rotten compost to assist the composting process. Phosphonitrosulphocomposts were similarly prepared containing approximately 4.9 per cent P2O2 and 1.6–2.1 per cent N by substituting straw with water hyacinth (2.5:1.5) and cow dung with poultry manure (1:1) and adding through the slurry 2 per cent P2O2 as rock phosphate, 12 per cent iron pyrites (S 22.4%) equal to the amount of rock phosphate, and 1% urea N along with microbial cultures. The quality and crop response to phosphocomposts were substantially improved compared with control compost: they contained higher total P, water-soluble and citrate-solnble P, total Nand NO3-N, total S and available S. Phosphocomposts at 2.5 t ha−1 along with 50% recommended NPK compared well with 100% recommended chemical fertilizers in terms of plant growth, nodulation, drymatter accumulation and seed yield of groundnut (Arachis hypogaea).
