Information Seeking Behavior of Farmers in Rural Areas of Kerala

Abraham Laila T

Abstract

Information is a crucial component for the sustainable agricultural development. To understand the nature of utilization of agricultural information by the rural community, a study of the information seeking behavior of farmers in rural areas was conducted. Kerala the southern most highly literate state was taken as the sample area of study. 500 respondents from five districts in Kerala were selected as samples. The study found that even though innovative technologies and modern cultivation methods have been evolved as a result of rigorous research conducted in the State, these are not seen applied in the farms due to the lack of proper information transfer mechanisms and integrated information system in the agricultural sector. Lack of information literacy lack of proper dissemination of agricultural information by media etc also contributed to the failure. A few suggestions for improving the situation are also put forward.
