Abstract

India embarks on a new era of promoting a hundred smart cities. Smart cities will be equipped with smart features in transportation system, buildings, power and water supply, sewerage and waste disposal system. Proposed smart cities will depend on technology heavily. The rate of urbanization will be faster which create low and order issues. With fast moving techno-centric population the threats of crime like cyber crime, kidnapping, substance abuse, land grabbling, crime against women and organized crime like terror attacks will be on rise. Smart cities are being planned on the basis of infrastructural development but are we really heading towards a smart society? Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore all the urban centers witnessed steady rise in rope cases. Smart cities will bring huge money circulation which will give rise to sophisticated type of economic crimes. The study has been supplemented by secondary data on urbanization as well as crimes in Indian urban centers along with some perception study on crime of urban dwellers. To deal with smart crimes of smart cities we need SMART governance.
