Effect of cations and anions on the absorption of sulphur (S35) by raya seedlings (Brassica juncea Coss)*

The study was conducted in solution culture in glass house taking various combinations of different cations (Na+, NH4+, Mg2+, Ca2+ and Al3+) and anions (NOa-, Cl-, SeO32- and PO43-) on the absorption of labelled sulphur S35, in 15 days old Raya seedlings. NH4+, Mg2+, Ca2+ and Al3+ increased the absorption of sulphur by seedlings in the order Al3+, Ca2+, Mg2+, NH4+ while Na+ decreased it indicating that absorption was related to valence as well as chemical properties of these elements. All anions except NO3- decreased the absorption of sulphur but selenium being similar analogue showed more depression followed by phosphorus and chloride. NO3-, however, increased the absorption of sulphur in this experiment. The rate of sulphur absorption per hour showed decreasing trend with the advancement of time of experimentation. The effect of cations was related to the amount of positive charge and highest charged ion being most effective, while the anions had some sort of competition being similar charged ions or analogues. Selenite/selenate ions showed stronger antagonism whereas phosphorus and chloride had comparatively less effects.
