OBJECTIVE-In this randomized controlled clinical trial(RCT) we have compared clinical and microbiological effect of two different concentrations of commercially available chlorhexidine gel (CHLOSITECE and HEXIGELR) in treatment of localized periodontal pocket as an adjunct to scaling & root planing (SRP).
MATERIALS AND METHODS-30 patients were selected and divided into 3 groups. Patients of group A were treated by SRP, group B by SRP + HEXIGEL (1% Chlorhexidine) application and group C were assigned to CHLOSITE (1.5% Chlorhexidine). After gel application treated sites were sealed by Coe-pack. Clinical (Clinical attachment level) and microbiological parameters (colony forming units per ml of GCF) were recorded at baseline and after 3 months. Statistical analysis of the data was calculated using paired and unpaired t test.
RESULTS-Clinical improvement was seen in all groups with mean clinical attachment level gain of 12.84%, 21.44% and 34.95% for groups A, B and C respectively. The mean microbial count reduction for group A, B and C were 27.3%, 37.47% and 57.8% respectively.
CONCLUSION-This RCT showed that placement of CHLOSITECE gel as an adjunct to SRP for treatment of localized periodontal pockets had better clinical and microbiological results as compared to other local drug delivery systems used till date.
Chlosite gel, Hexigel, Local drug delivery, Anaerobes.
