Abstract

Introduction

Limited psychiatric health care services coupled with increased psychiatric disorders led their families to play a critical role in taking care of the patients. Long term care to psychiatric patients ’increases caregivers ’burden and decreases their mental health status. This may result in increasing psychiatric stress of caregivers and decreased patient care. Aim of this study to determine the effectiveness of comprehensive educational intervention (CEI) on stress and coping among caregivers of hospitalised psychiatric patients

Methods

Quantitative pre experimental design was used. Total 100 caregivers of hospitalised patients who met the inclusion criteria were selected with convenient sampling method. Pre test assessment of level of stress and coping was done and Comprehensive Educational Intervention (CEI) was given to all caregivers. Post test assessment of stress and coping level was done after one week. A structured tool including demographic data was prepared. Level of stress and coping was assessed by using rating scale. Data analysis was done using STATA 11.1 with the level of significance at p < 0.05

Results

Stress level was found significantly (p < 0.001) lower in psychological stress 10.50 ± 3.25, social stress 10.42 ± 2.59 and physiological stress 5.74 ± 1.68 after CEI. During pre test 90% subjects had moderate level of stress and 10% had mild level of stress whereas during post test 100% caregivers had mild level of stress. This study found that stress level was significantly (p<0.001) reduced after implementation of CEI. During pre test all the caregivers (100%) had poor level of coping In post test, 4% of the care givers had poor level of coping, 94% had moderate coping and 2% of had good level of coping. It is found that CEI was significantly (p<0.001) effective to improve coping skills among caregivers

Conclusion

Study findings show that Comprehensive Educational Intervention (CEI) was significantly effective to reduce level of stress and improve coping among caregivers of hospitalised psychiatric patients.
