A Study to assess perceived needs, stress and coping strategies adopted among caregivers of patients admitted at critical care areas of Pravara Rural Hospital, Loni (Bk)

Abstract

Background

Admission in intensive care unit produces a crisis situation for both the patient and family members. During this period families deal with many stress including role changes financial concerns, uncertain patient prognosis. If the event is not handled properly, the result may be prolonged physical and psychological instability of family member, When changes occur in health of one family member, all members are affected.

Objectives

1) To assess the perceived needs, stress and coping strategies adopted by care givers, 2) To compare perceived needs, stress and coping strategies with socio demographic characteristics of caregivers, 3) To find association between perceived need, stress and coping strategies with demographic characteristics, 4) To identify relationship between perceived needs, stress and coping strategies adopted by caregivers.

Material and Methods

A descriptive study with cross sectional survey approach was undertaken in constituent units of Pravara Medical Trust Loni (Bk). A total of 60 caregivers were selected with the help of non-probability purposive sampling to assess perceived need, stress and coping strategies adopted. A nurse investigator conducted a structured interview for 20 minutes to collect data. The data was analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistics wherever required.

Results

The results revealed that a significant percentage (60.61%) had ‘very high perceived needs’ and the mean score was (45.46±4.1). In relation to stress, (76%) had ‘severe coping’ the mean score was (62.46±10.84), and about (82.92%) had ‘adaptive coping’ and the mean score was (179.11±27.68). There was a significant association found between perceived need and socio demographic variables like gender, marital status, relation with patient, occupation, type of family, time spent with the patient, distance from the hospital. It was found a positive correlation between perceived need, stress and coping strategies adopted.

Conclusion

Majority of the caregivers of critically ill patient had very high perceived needs, severe stress and adaptive coping strategies. The extraneous variables like gender, marital status, relation with patient, occupation, type of family, distance from the hospital influences the caregivers perceived need, stress and coping strategies.
