Abstract

Background

Maintaining the health of prison inmates during incarceration is the responsibility of the country, as they form the integral part of any community. Though much effort has been taken to provide health services to prisoners’ equivalent to the community, certain barriers prevent them in accessing these services. Purpose of the study was to identify perceived barriers of women prisoners preventing them in accessing prison health services

Method

A descriptive cross sectional study was conducted among 200 women prisoners from six central prisons of India. Perceived barriers in accessing the prison health services were assessed by individual interview using a structured barrier scale.

Result

Fear of inhumane treatment was the major barrier preventing women prisoners accessing health care services, followed by doubt about the quality of prison health services and unpleasant experiences of co prisoners.

Discussion

Identifying the barriers for accessing prison health services as perceived by the inmates gives target areas to be addressed in improving health care access by them which can reduce the economic and health care burden to a greater extent.
