Torture is centuries old method used for coercive interrogation. Shockingly, a great majority of countries despite the implementation of laws against the torture and being signatories to various international treaties are using torture (physical and mental) to ferret out truth from an unwilling person under the garb of various glitches in the treaties/conventions or due to laxity in the applied sanction which is merely a ‘publicity’ that they have broken their treaty obligations. Though, signatories to the Third and Fourth Geneva Conventions agree not to torture protected persons (POWs and enemy civilians) in times of war or armed conflicts, yet these persons too are subjected to torture with scant regard to these conventions.
Although Amnesty International advocates that torture and ill-treatment are repugnant, abhorrent and immoral and that various Human right organizations are actively involved in controlling the use of torture, yet it is continued unabated and practiced in two third of the world's nations. Terrorists are the persons who unleash a reign of terror and violence by bomb/missile culture or through terrorism related activities.
“Truth Serum” or “Truth Drug” facilitate coercive interrogation without causing physical assault. A variety of hypno-sedatives and psychotropic drugs are presently being used to create a “twilight zone” or “trance state” to break down the psychological defenses of enemy spies, POWs and combatants to make them talk. Since these drugs have a high potential for abuse liabilities hence United Nations consider the use of truth drugs a form of torture and does not approve of them.
