Cooperatives endowed with strong capital base possess immense potential in the institutionalization of rural finance. The study of PACS, based on secondary data, spanningfrom 2002–03 to 2013–14, for the state of Punjab underscores its inadequacy. Permember and per-society availability of working capital, share capital, own funds and deposits lack prudential mixing. There prevail noticeable inter-district, inter-society, and inter-period variations. Working capital per-society and per-member basis recorded modest real prices growth. The decline in the number of societies along with the rise in the overall level of membership warrants attention. Cooperative rural credit arrangement needs strong policy intervention to meet the growing credit requirements of borrowers.
