Relationship of Soybean Mosaic Virus with its Aphid Vectors

Abstract

Soybean mosaic virus (SMV) was transmitted more efficiently by Myzus persicae, than Aphis gossypii, Aphis craccivora and Aphis glycines. Ten adults of Myzus persicae per plant with acquisition access of 10 minutes and inoculation access of 15 minutes showed maximum infection. Pre-acquisition starvation for 1 hour was beneficial, while post-starvation upto 2 hours resulted in very low transmission. The feeding aphid lost its infectivity after 1 hour. The studies indicated non-persistent relationship of SMV with Myzus persicae.
